i've got a town ace auto, and by the shift lever there is (on the left hand passenger side) a oblong red button.
its defiently connected to something cos i've taken the cover of the gear lever it pushes in & out but when the engine is running is dont seem to do anything

i've just had the mech do a complete rebuild and he cant help me...hes a professional guy sooo anyone got any ideas?.......please

This is to override the Gear lever lock.

I used this when I had problems with my battery and there wasn't enough juice for the car to recognise the engine was running.

To demonstrate, keep the engine switched off, put your foot on the brake hold the button then wiggle the gear lever up and down.

One of those things you think are completley pointless until you have to use it.
