(Home) Transmission cooler

Hi Everyone,
Can anyone tell me if there is a kit or something to fit a transmission cooler to a Toyota Townace Royal Lounge 1993 version. I live in the Manchester area.Or is there a company who will send one out to me.
Thanks

My 1990 has a transmission cooler as part of the radiator (nearside upright), I assume that the newer shape are the same?
Should you want to fit a separate kit then the pipe work is there, just needs tapping into or diverting. There are many oil cooler kits that should fit the bill, available at any auto shop, or try a caravan outlet.

I fitted an oil cooler (see http://www.kenlowe.com/oil-coolers/engine/index.html), but there are issues you must consider.

The existing oil cooler is built in to the vertical radiator. This helps heat the coolant returning to the engine via the Thermostat. Under high load or when towing, this causes the thermostat to open earlier (at a lower engine temperature) then would otherwise happen, allowing the engine to stay cooler.

Fitting an alternative cooler (disconnecting the existing cooler) made my engine temperature increase and become more erratic as a result.

If you wish to add an extra oil cooler (it’s only necessary if you’re towing heavy things up hill) - I’d recommend you put it in series with the existing cooler.

Alternatively a small electric fan positioned in the top left of the radiator (it fits under the cowling between the Rad and normal fan), this will work just as well as an additional oil cooler, although make sure it does not switch on until the temperature exceeds 85-90 degrees, so the thermostat has time to open.

If you’re towing heavy loads up hill then beware, the cooling system on these engines cannot dissipate the heat produced at full throttle (with or without an extra oil cooler), so sustained full throttle will cause your engine to overheat and eventually fail.

If you want to be able to use full throttle for sustained periods then additional modifications are necessary. (I can tow my 21ft Caravan, wife and six kids over the French Alps at full throttle) – drop me an email if you want to know more.

Good luck.
