(Home) Noise from engine

Hi guys, started my diesel liteace this morning to find a noise coming from the engine.Sounded like a marble bouncing about inside the sump.but after about 10 seconds it stopped. In turning the engine off and starting her up again , no noise.Any ideas. I service her regularly with good oil and filters but the sound this morning was rather worrying.

could be a no lube/wear while prior to the oil fully circulating.
could try an oil and filter change initially. don't use too thin a grade of oil........

Guys, the rattle noise from the lower regions of my 2ct engine seems to be getting louder.Ive checked all pulleys and crankshaft pulley for movement and all seem to be ok.The sound is like a steel ball bouncing around in a tin can, but its not always constant. One morning i,ll start the vehicle and she sounds fine ,but other times she has that strange rattle sound .Any idea guys ?. She has regular oil changes ,the last of which i did last week.

Stewart,
Why not resort to the old stethescope ( can't say it never mind spell it !! )trick.
When ever you next get the noise. Get a looooong screwdriver - Place the sharp end at strategic places on the engine i.e. Rocker cover, timing belt cover, get underneath and place it against the sump ( watch out for the pulleys!! )and place the other end against your ear. Where the noise is loudest may give you an indication of where the source of your problem is.
Hope this helps.

Stuart,

I often get a noise that sounds like when you first shake a spray can of paint and the agitator is hitting the can. Had it for 2 and a bit years now, have heard several other Aces have it. The trouble is you convince yourself there is a problem and now you hear it even more.
Hope yours is also a quirk of the 2CT and nothing sinister.

Could it be air getting drawn into the fuel line?

Don't forget that owners have discovered noises don't always come from where they seem to come from ... a rattle from the antenna against the roof has apaarently sounded as if it comes from under the driver's seat.

I had/have the noise described....think it was DM suggested air...some fuel hoses could easily be twisted on their spigots, though they did not leak fluid.....
As a tempory measure I added small cable ties to improve the seal....this seemed to get rid of the noise(I would describe noise as rattling milk bottles)
Prior to improving the seal the noise was loud enough to echo around the streets...it did start to return after a few weeks and is now back (though much, much quieter).
I'm assuming that when I get round to renewing the loose hoses, that should be the end of it.....
I doubt air going through the deisel pump does it much good....
