(Home) Front fog light bulbs

I recently removed both of my front fog light bulbs as they had both blown within a few days of each other.

Any idea where I can get replacements?

They look like they have been dipped into white paint.
I can see nothing similar in shops, and have now mislaid the old ones to get details from them.

Silly me!

>>>Front fogs (2): The front fogs are standard bayonet but with unusual 35W yellow-tinted-glass bulbs. Can replace with 21 Watt clear #382 (same as direction indicators?) or Guardian bulb No 765, 55w (both have same bayonet base as the Townace bulb). See Note 3. <<<<<

My bulbs were NOT yellow tinted, they were clear glass, but looked like they had been dipped into white paint on their tips.

I am currently using clear ones, but the effect is so different from the originals.

Maybe I should experiment by dipping a couple of bulbs in white paint?

What watt and make are the old ones?

Any paint would have to be high temp type.

The paint does the same job as a metal bulb shield in a normal headlamp. It's a commonly used technique for removing hot-spots from the light pattern and minimising glare. As Clive says, VHT paint is needed, even for a non-halogen lamp.

I still cannot find the originals. I know I still have them, but they are hiding from me.

I have to spend a day tidying my garage soon, so maybe they will turn up?

I have just found my old front fog light bulbs from my Townie.

They have been dipped in white paint and the specs are as follows>>

Koito 12v 35w Ko
There is also a number 39 in black on there as well.

I have never seen anything like these in any car shop, not that it really matters as I got it through an mot with clear bulbs, but they do look much different in use and I would like to be able to get the proper bulbs if it is possible.

Not a euro spec bulb according to my local autoelectrical specialist and we went thru all their catalogues. Get a brighter light from halogens anyway these days.

Right, long winded definitive answer time, sorry if it bores you!!!

The bulbs that SHOULD be in the front fogs of an 89-93 Townie are in fact a yellow painted bulb of 12volt 35watt, BC Bayonet Cap. The bulbs that Steve has pulled out of his fog lamps have been swapped out of the turn lamp units on the front corner of the vehicle, presumably when the turn lamps were converted to UK spec 'sidelamps'. He is quite correct in that they are a clear bulb, with a white spot on them, as DM says to block the glare point from the bulb. This bulb is also 12 volt 35watt & BC cap.

You problem is that there is no use for that bulb in the European vehicle parc, so basically, short of getting them shipped in from Japan, you won't get any.

You have really two solutions for your problem, either fit a standard R382 bulb, which is again BC cap with a 12 volt 21watt rating, this will give you a much reduced light beam from the fog lamps. Alternatively you could go for the conversion that I have done, which is to go for a 795 bulb, this again has the standard Bayonet Cap base, but has a 55 watt halogen top to it, much the same as a standard European halogen foglamp bulb. This fits straight in to the existing bulb holder & I have had no problem with wiring or heat effects from running with these. The light is powerful & very crisp white beam.

To look at these bulbs, go to my webpage to see it http://www.robdrinkwater.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/RJDComputers/towniepics.htm

Hope this answers you query fully.

Regards Rob.

It's not really important that I change the bulbs as it did pass an mot with 21 watt clear bulbs.

They just look weird to me.
