(Home) Useful cooling mod

Short answer....cut a 'V' into the bottom of the pick up tube..

Long answer......well...the hiace has been drawing small amounts of air on cool down for around a year now....anyway, this has recently got worse...finally put on the townie free vacuum cap (T16401-64501)......perfect fit, should have spent the £11.80 a long time ago....anyway problem still there..

On inspection the pick up tube has gone slightly banana shaped...I'm fairly convinced that it was sucking on the side of the expansion tank like a 'limpet' preventing it from drawing fluid back when engine off.
When the engine was on the vibes may have allowed some fluid back.
So I got a blade and cut a 'V' shape into the end of the tube...so now it is impossible for this 'limpet effect' to happen again......operating temp is perfect again.... ok it was only 5 or 6 degrees up for the time it took to blow the air out and suck the fluid back etc. ...but a blown hose would have been the final result (or worse). Then again 5-6 degrees up on a townie may be relatively worse than for the hiace

I really do think this measure would be a wise precaution for anyone having a vehicle with a pick up tube dangling into the top of an expansion bottle....and it costs nothing to do

Watch your fingers...those stanley knives are sharp......
