(Home) Brake fluid leak

Help I was pulled up by the police for routine check of vehicle everything is OK except a leak from back driver side behind wheel it is not brake fluid but the police officer said its from the hub. I have checked it, it is very fresh oil dose not seem to look smell like breake oil.What could it be..

1. Rear transmission oil - leaking hub oil seal.
2. Breake fluid - easy check of fluid level will cross this off of the list.
3. Very unlikely but melted grease from hub bearing - should have found out about that by noise/ride/locking up!
Which ever it is it needs to be sorted urgently!

Are we talking rear wheel or front wheel?

Front wheel: If you had the airconditioning running, it could be the condensed moisture. If it's black its engine oil, if its red its ATF, if its clear its diesel/brakefluid.

rear wheel could be leaking suspension strut.

Oooh this looks familiar. See thread below, 'A Townie's Tale'.

What makes you so sure it's not brake fluid? Not much else could come from the hub itself. Take the drum off and have a look. You will soon know if it's brake fluid or not.
