(Home) Noises

Hi can anyone help when I start up my Master Ace Surf 2LITRE T/D I get a loud screeching (like fanbelt slipping). The engine runs for about 1to2 Mins and it stops.Any output in Power it starts screeching again,ie Headlights,Aircon.and so on.It gets quite loud at times.I tried oiling all the Pulleys but to no avail this has been happening since I got the Vehicle.I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Let me see if I have got this right.
Engine starts and runs, once started it screeches then goes quiet. If you try to drive or use anything it screeches again?

Loose or defective alternator drive belt(s).

If I've got it wrong please explain again.

It certainly sounds like a loose belt. Oiling the pulleys is a BAD idea as it will contaminate the belts and actually cause them to slip more. The only cure is to tighten the belts. This is not a lot of fun as you need the floor pan out to get at them. Check the belts to make sure they are not cracked or glazed, in which case you need to change them.

William , you might know that v belts rely on the sides of the v for traction. When they wear, the base of the v comes into contact with the base of the pulley V and the it wont matter how much you tighten it, because it will slip. All new belts streetch initially and then they seem to settle down, but the cheap ones ,well they seem to continue for longer and furter. The Ace does need careful setting of its belts (hence the double belt modification from Toyota). So first check to see if the V 'bottoms' then check for signs of fraying/cracking. Power steer belt is not a V belt but a multi-V, seems the most reliable too.

Hi Clive,John,J Adgo.
Thanks for your quick replies.
I will check alternator belt first to see if it is loose.I will to explain the problem, when I start up the vehicle I get a loud screeching noise for 1to2 mins I hear a click from under the passenger seat and then the screeching stops.Driving along normal no probs, turn the aircon on no probs turn headlights on no probs,if I slow down or stop the screeching starts again, everything is allright until I slow down or stop,
is it because I am not drawing enough power from the alternator to keep these items running whilst idling.
I know this explanation is complicated but if anyone knows the answer it the users of this board someone always comes up trumps.Cheers once again W

sounds like the draw of the glowplugs is making the belt slip.

If all the belts are ok then the fault could be a bearing...

Sounds to me, too, that the alternator belt not tight enough, especially if it's the version that has only one belt.
It's screeching when the load on the alternator demands too much torque at the alternator pulley.
As David says this is occuring while the glowplugs remain on "for 1 to 2 mins" until the "click" (perhaps not quite that long?).
It's also happening at low revs because the alternator is converting mechanical power into electrical power. Mechanical power is torque times rotational speed - so when the revs drop more torque is required to make the alternator deliver the same power - and that extra torque takes the belt(s) into slipping.
William, you should be able to reach the alternator belt(s) to see how tight they are without taking out the driver's seat/floor - though they'll have to come out to tighten the alternator belt(s). As a rough guide I would say that at the middle of the top section you shouldn't be able to push them down, with one finger tip, more than 5mm.

I would like to thank everyone for their helpwith the problem I have had.I think Dave Mason might have the most logical explanation.Once again thanks everyone for your help. This board of knowledge is 100%.
