(Home) This is how to remove the radiator

Toyota Spacecruiser 2.0GL Auto 1989 (F-Reg) Right Hand Drive Model

Tools - Socket Ratchet, Short Extension, 14mm, 12mm & 10mm sockets, 14mm spanner, Pair of good pliers, good large screwdriver, jack and axle stands.

Removal of Radiator

Underneath the car
1. Jack up the car, enusring it is supported safely (never use the wheel changing jack to work under car)
2. Remove the two (12mm + short extension) bolts holding the lower plastic engine cover in place (one either side of the car, it is just in front of the sump)
3. Locate and remove the two nuts (12mm + short extension) up inside the main cross member of the car that secure the bottom of the radiator to the car.
4. Place a bowl or drip tray under the radiator tap (this is on the offside bottom rear corner of the radiator and is plastic).
5. Undo the tap a little, until water starts to drip.
6. Get out from under the car

Inside the car
7. Prepared to get annoyed.
8. Remove the four bolts (14mm) holding down the drivers seat, two at front, two at rear
9. Lift offside (bit near the door) upwards until the slide guide is released and take out the seat (place somewhere where it will not get wet or dirty)
10. Raise the engine cover and secure safely.
11. Remove the radiator cap.
12. Undo the four cross head screws holding the centre console in place and carefully lift off console (you do not need to remove any handles or knobs, just lift it clear)
13. Lift the carpet away from under the driver’s seat.
14. Remove the eleven (14mm) bolts holding down the large engine cover.
15. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the console (these are clips with catches, so use your eyes and you will see that press the right bit and they come apart easily, don’t force)
16. Working from the passenger side, lift the now release engine cover and push it towards the drivers side (this will give you access for the rest of the job)
17. Locate and remove the two (10mm) bolts securing the radiator shroud, top left and top right (rear view) and lift away shroud (it does come out of the top, just be patient)
18. Disconnect the two large radiator hoses, the single small hose (top right of radiator, rear view) and the two small pipes on the left side of the radiator (rear view) these two connect to the auto gear box and contain ATF fluid. (The clips are a real pain as they are spring clips, use a good wide pair of pliers squeeze and wiggle the clips back down the hose. You will find the hoses may have become glued to the pipe, use a very large screwdriver and wiggle the ends, don’t try to force them off, be patient, once they have released, they should pull off, watch you knuckles)
19. Locate and remove the (14mm) bolt securing the top of the radiator to the car.
20. Take the left-hand side of the radiator (rear view) and lift upwards and slowly remove the radiator out of the car.

Yes you have done it, not to bad and takes about one hour to complete.

Rear view = looking at the radiator from the back of the car.

I know this work cause I just did it. When I have had the radiator re-cored I will put it back in the car and write up how it went.

I have tried to make this as easy as possible and with as little climbing in and out and under the car.

best regards
