(Home) Jam 2004 Bridport #7

Only one week to the Bridport Ace Jam now, and the sun is out. I will be checking the local weather during next week and will report back.

One of my suppliers has stomped up some cash to pay for the BBQ and spit roast for Saturday night

So far it looks like 15 definite, three possible and Dave Mason on a day trip on Saturday.

have just bought new gazebo so should keep dry, what time are people arriving, hoping to set off from torbay at 3pm should take about 1 1/2 hours with no overheats, will have water tanker following...... :-)

- (#11748) neil (torbay), 28 Jun 04 16:09

we'll be coming eight-up in the old girl so make sure there's plenty of burgers on. Looking forward to putting some faces to names.

- (#11748) John Shaw, 29 Jun 04 14:24

Aiming to arrive mid afternoon but may change to late evening. Anyone got tide tables as I was hoping to go fossil hunting Saturday sometime?

- (#11748) Clive (Bristol), 29 Jun 04 14:31

We will probably be ariving about 3pm on Friday and not leaving untill 3pm Sunday. Apart from a bun run on Saturday of course.

- (#11748) dave Bright (Bournemouth), 29 Jun 04 15:37

We plan to set off from Bristol about 1pm on Friday. Expecting a 3 hour trip. We bought a better caravan today so don't laugh if you see us faffing about trying to figure out the new owning up!

So if anyone is interesting in a Mid 80's 5 birth Lunar caravan, I have one going "cheap" cus I need the driveway space.

Clive looked up the tide times on the fossil beach and I think it goes out about 11am'ish on Saturday.

- (#11748) Jason Bamford, 29 Jun 04 15:50

Fossil beach
I'm right confused now, don't know if I'm looking at high tide or low tide (or even the right year). Still they are dead easy to find at anytime apart from the cut off beaches!

- (#11748) Clive (Bristol), 29 Jun 04 16:21

Jurassic fossil hunters.
From the Hydrographers web site -high tide 7.11 and 19.28 low tide 11.22 GMT so that should be 8.11 and 12.22 BST am I right?

- (#11748) Clive (Bristol), 30 Jun 04 10:00

Yes you are granvile, but who will be minding the shop?

- (#11748) dave Bright (Bournemouth), 30 Jun 04 12:18

I thought there would be plenty of fossils at the Jam? I mean vehicles not people of course.

- (#11748) Ian Dunse (Derbs), 1 Jul 04 01:01

Granvill (how do you spell it?) will fit a trip to the beach in-between morning delivery and chatting to the milklady. I trust Arkwright will not be visiting nurse Gladys in the meantime!
My Ace maybe a fossil but it does not run on fossil fuel.
See you all there.

- (#11748) Clive (Bristol), 1 Jul 04 01:28

Ok Granvill, you can have a lunch break.

- (#11748) dave Bright (Bournemouth), 1 Jul 04 03:50

Thanks everybody it was great to meet you, and yes there was a SpACEcruiser there, along with Hi-Ace, Masterace, Liteace (old and new shape) and Townace.
BBQ was great thank you Dave.
The site was interesting and had a slippery top field the approach to which was steep and muddy, Dave Bright made it up un 4WD (just), us mere mortals with 2WD camped at the bottom.
However today all packed up and ready to I gave it a try and got up there. Alas the task must have been a little too much for the old girl. A few miles on the way home and I lost all power, poop my bio-power fuel I thought, no it was that small leak from the injection pump that now held no fuel at all, I came home on the back of a transporter. Tens minutes at home and a new O ring it's running again! But you should see the state of the engine bay!
I trust all the little people had a good sleep all the way home, and that all the mud has not bunged the washing machines up.
Clive, who got home on less than one litre!

Would just like to thank Dave and Tracy for a great weekend, Even the rain made it interesting (slippery grass). sorry to hear you only made it a few miles clive, just glad it was not the fuel that caused the problem. father in law was very hungery allthe way home due to the smell of fish and chips.....:-) have not worked the fuel figures out yet, will have to wait for afew more miles.... was nice to see some new faces as well... must try and remember everybodys name now...

- (#11748) neil (torbay), 4 Jul 04 13:19

On reading all your messages, I guess that Arkwright, Granville, nurse Gladys and all of you jammers had a really wonderful time. Nobody has mentioned how good the roast was though. I couldn't make it, but I read every thread above, wishing that I could go. ( :( Sob Sob). It sounded like great fun. Anyway, are there any pics?

In the end it turned out to be quite an eventful meeting.
I found something even more uncomfortable to sleep on than a Royal Lounge seat, and lay awake on Friday night thinking, "What have I done? Why have I bought people I like to this miserable, wet, windswept hill?" and those thoughts were on my mind most of Saturday as well. Then the sun came out a bit and we fired up the barbeque, and the free food seemed to cheer everybody up, and the roast lamb disappeared fast.

A few day trippers turned out on Saturday, just as most people had gone off to the beach to do a spot of fossil hunting. Dave Mason arrived and almost immediately got stuck into Eddie's MK1 Townace, to try to identify what modifications are required for the early Towance and Space cruiser temperature gauges. Andy turned up in his space Cruiser, and it was difficult to tell the difference between it and Eddies Townace. The 4 inch wide strip with “Townace” on it was the biggest clue, but apart from that, there were only a few subtle differences.

Only two people made it up into the top field, me in my 4wd on a wet Friday evening, but it was a real struggle with normal road tyres, then Clive managed it on Sunday morning in his 2wd when the grass was a bit drier. Unfortunately we were told that a 15 by 9 metre Marquee was going to be erected on the Saturday morning, so we had to leave the flattest part of the field free for it. In the end it never turned up, but at least the children enjoyed playing in the muddy bank. That just left us parents fuming at the thought that we had not enough clothes for them.

Sunday was a little rainy, but more sunny than Saturday, and a couple of day trippers turned out again, but most people left before lunch, just as the sun finally came out for good. It was a shame about the weather, but then that’s quite usual for an Ace Jam unfortunately.

When I got home I was shocked to hear that Clive had gone home piggy back style on a transporter, but was pleased it wasn’t due to the Bio Diesel, otherwise we would all have been in trouble. How prophetic was it that I had offered one of my increasing collection of fuel injection pumps on Saturday night? If anyone needs one by the way, I now have about three going begging.

I hope that the rest of you got home without incident and enjoyed the weekend?
If I can arrange some better weather, does anyone fancy a repeat next year?

- (#11748) dave Bright (Bournemouth), 6 Jul 04 03:45

I'm up for it, if it's on.
Did 70 miles yesterday without a problem, even treated the old girl to two new tyres, I didn't like the sideways pivot I did on the Friday evening.
Just arrange it for a weekend when a Marquee is not due to go up.

- (#11748) Clive (Bristol), 6 Jul 04 04:09
