(Home) 2ct turbo vacuum actuator thing

Had to fix alternator, during which I noticed that the rod linking a vacuum actuator to the turbo is locked solid. Loosened bolts to actuator . . the diaphragm works ok . . rod (and associated lever on turbo) still won't budge.

Can anyone tell me what the rod does . . is it normally stiff? - if not: could it be related to my poor mpg? (gpm!!) Will removing turbo and fiddling help or will this finish it off for good ( which I can't afford right now!) Turbo works ok, quiet.

It's the wastegate, controls boost pressure. It's under pressure, not vacuum, sure you're trying to move the rod the right way? If it IS seized, you should be getting massive overboosts (amber turbo light on dash on...). A good dousing with a penetrant and a bit of brute force should free it tho.
