(Home) Fusible link

I've finally got around to investigating my glowplug problem but fallen at the first hurdle. According to the engine manual there is a fusible link near to the battery. I don't mean the bank of fuses under the panel, under the driver's seat. The manual shows another one between the battery and that bank of fuses. All that I can find is a cylindrical in line connector. No fuse, just a spade fitting.

Anyone able to help me out?

Oh ye of little patience!

If you remove the battery then the battery tray, the fusible link is set against the back of the bulkhead. So simple really. After all why put something like a fuse in a place that is easily accessible (???).

Any way that's not it. It comprises a piece of wire so thick, it would take half the National Grid to blow it. Now according to the diagram there's another one before the relays. Looks like it's time to dismantle the B pillar .....

Hiya Ian, I missed the glow plug relay history breifing - have you lost the supply to the relay input?
How about just running your own supply to the relay before your van looks like customs and excise have been looking for contraband on it, just make sure there is some sort of fuse in the circuit - (you could locate it somewhere accessible even) vw do a inline heavy fuse for the transporter van series im sure you could get hold of one of them.

Thanks for the reply Jim.

I've been right through the van, found some coins, stale peanuts, fluff and old cinema ticket stubs (LOL) but no second relay. I need to confirm voltage at No1 relay before deciding what to do next. If I run a seperate feed from the battery, what size fuse do you reckon I need on it? 80A or more? I'm more inclined to fabricate my own than go trawling a scrapyard.

BTW - the glowplug resistor looks like it may be croaked as well (the barrel thingy that screws into the inlet manifold). You still got the one from your scrapper?

Sorry, I meant a second fusible link not relay. Must be thinking of the upcoming olympics ...

Hiya Ian, id say that most glow plugs draw about 12-15 amps as a general rule (thats 12 - 15 amps each). So a total currect draw of 48 to 60 amps would fit nicely into your 80 amp fuse rating
I didnt know that the glowplugs have a resistor (is this a ballast to ensure the crank volts are sufficient?) the only barrel shape i can see is under my vest. do you mean the post of insulated washers where the wires connect - and this has a resisor hidden in it?

Jim

It's ok. I've isolated it to the resistor so no need for that fuse. I was thrown off course by it first blowing the 80A fuse then not and just not working at all.

So I'm in need of a glowplug resistor. It's the barrel shaped thing that sticks out from the inlet manifold just behind the fuel pump. It connects the glowplug bridge to the feed from #1 relay and the little wire on the end that runs to #2 relay. It's got an earthing material isolating the centre screw from the outer barrel. I guess it is this that has broken down. Have you still got your inlet manifold with it intact and prepared to split it? Or in fact anyone else for that matter? I can take a photo if it would help determine what it is.

I could always try Toyota to see how much for a new one, just for a laugh (yeah right).

Hiya Ian
See if you can do me a picture of just what you need - if i have one i will post it out for you seeing as its you , might have to wait til i get back off my hols though

You changed your addy Jim? Just had my earlier message returned.

Ian.I have one of these, which you are welcome to if Jim cannot help. I emailed, with a picture attachment, to your Netscape address but, it gets bounced back as undeliverable

John

Thanks for your offer, I don't understand why it should get bounced, plenty of room in my inbox.

Jim's got one and has kindly offered it me but is off to France for a month. I'm in no rush but if you are offering I would be happy to take it off your hands and pay you for your trouble. Incidentally the resistor is identified on page ST6 of the engine manual, just so that we are sure about what we are describing.

I don't have your e-mail addy anymore. Do you want to try again with/without attachment? Alternatively try my old address ian.dunse@talk21.com

cheers
Ian
