Greetings from Christchurch, New Zealand. My wife & I have previously owned a 1992 townace 4x4( 2.0 petrol)and are currently happy owners of a 1988 Masterace Surf turbo diesel. Our only complaint is that the lower part of the dash that includes the heater controls and switches for rear wiper, rear door lock & rear window demister is not illuminated at night when the lights are on. I've checked the fuses but there does not seem to be a specific fuse for dash lights (the speedo etc lights work ok). I presume this panel SHOULD light up!!?? Could it be a problem in the wiring? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely wiring. Pop the lower dash out and see if the switches get any power on the lighting circuit.
I would not think it is the bulbs all blown together, but stranger things have happened. I think the fuse that covers the speedo covers the rest of the dash as well.
