(Home) Wiring and connecting up a 2ct engine

Hi!

I'm in the process of planting a 2CT engine in a newly rebuilt Series I Land Rover. The handbook and the archives were a great help, but there are still a couple of things I need to figure out on the motor.

The engine is a cheap 2nd hand import from Japan, comes with all cables and other attachments cut out of the original car.

Based on the engine repair manual and the info on this site I managed to put together the puzzle of the vacuum pipes and the cooling system. The electrics are a bit of a challenge, though.

As far as I can establish, the motor is a front-engine-rear-wheel drive, comes from an automatic car and had E.G.R. I fitted a flywheel, ditched the E.G.R. and the power steering pump. Kept the aircon pump - might turn it into an air compressor to pump up tyres later.

My questions:

A. Wiring.

1. There are a couple of wires attached to the injector pump. One goes to the fuel cut off solenoid - this one I managed to identify, but there are other two (grayish coloured), which I needed help with. Any idea where they go to? (Can send a picture of the motor and point out the wires on it)

2. There is a sensor on the front - bottom left hand side of the engine going into the sump. I presume that it is oil temperature as there is one going into the oil filter, which I guess must be the oil pressure sender unit. Am I correct?

B. Vacuum

1. The vacuum pump on my enigne is mounted on the pulley of the alternator. On the outlet there are two thinnish wires, which go across to the injector pump side - these I have connected. There is a thickish pipe that ends in a rubber elbow. I guess this goes to the brake booster. Can I simply blank this off (considering that a Series I Land Rover does not need a vacuum booster :)?

Many thanks!

A.1. the pair of wires are for the tacho sender

A.2. float switch for oil level. Allegedly also has a thermal switch to activate it at 60c IIRC

B. Vacuum? Yes, the bigger hose is the vacuum feed, and you may blank it off. Don't attempt to remove the pump,as amongst other things it's got an oil feed direct from the engine...

The other two wires are unknown to me. It might be that your version of the engine has a "poor vacuum" switch directly on the pump, whereas on most townies it's fitted to a seperate reservoir.

Many thanks David!

Regarding the tacho sender - do you know of a 'generic' tachometer (rev counter) available in spares shops I could use? Could a rev counter sold for petrol engines (the type that connects to the ignition coils) adopted to work with the sender in the 2CT?

Not easy, at a guess. the sender is reading off a gear inside the pump, so the frequency is probably a fair bit higher than the average car system...
