(Home) Noisy turbo

Hi,
I have a 1992 Liteace 2.0L 4WD automatic (new shape) and the turbo has been getting increasingly noisy over the last few weeks. It now makes a grating metallic noise around 2000rpm, disappears as the revs climb and then reappears louder at around 3000. It goes again if I keep increasing the revs.As it doesn't make any noise if I rev in neutral gear I can only assume it's the turbo at fault. SO far quotes for supplying and fitting a reconditioned turbo are betwenn 800 and 1200 pounds. BBC spares can suply a second hand turbo for 150 which I could probably get fitted for another 200. Has anyone else had a similar problem and is it definitely going to be the turbo? Is it a good idea to buy a second-hand one? I'd be grateful for any advice, especially if it saves me money!

Thanks,

Andy

Sounds like the turbo, although there's a slim chance it's a manifold leak.

If it is indeed the turbo, secondhand should be OK, I bought one from Bill and it was fine. I'd say your quotes for a rebuild are a bit high- I bought an overhaul kit from turbo technics for around £120 a couple of years back...

If it's not there when you rev in neutral, it's possibly the Auto box or the exhaust manifold leaking under load.
My thoughts are :- In neutral - main gears are not turning in the auto box- only idle gears - so its possibly main gears in "Drive" - my knowledge of Auto box's is limited !!!
Exhaust pressure must be related to ( in my opinion ) load, fuel input and air intake - surely under no load the pressure is reduced ????
I'm trying to identify a "Warble" I've developed - that is more pronounced under load and when warm and in low gears - 1st thoughts are that it's from the auto box and not the turbo !

I have had a very similar problem with my Turbo for a couple of months.

I am replacing it this weekend. Thanks to Clive for supply of 2nd hand Turbo.

My old man is coming from Dover to change them over for me. I will let you know how it goes and how long it took for an experienced mechanic(the old man!) to do this job on a vehicle he has never seen before.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I now need to admit to being totally stupid in initially describing this problem and to apologise for possibly wasting your time. In fact, the noise is still there when revving in neutral or park, although it is less pronounced. I think I was confused because the turbo light on the dashboard didn't come on. Anyway, some more food for thought if anyone's still interested:the noise is more like an electric drill than a whistle, it starts just before the turbo light on the dashboard comes on and it's higher pitched when it comes back in at about 3000rpm than it was at 2000rpm but a little quieter (more like a dentist's drill but louder!). Also the gear selected and speed of the car make no difference to the number of revs at which the noise appears. Finally there is no obvious loss of power accompanying the noise and I owuld have thought this made a manifold leak less likely. Any more suggestions welcome. Is there any way of diagnosing this without significant dismantling? Tony, does this still sound like a similar problem to yours? Do let me know how you get on replacing your turbo.

Thanks,

Andy

Replaced the turbo on Saturday/Sunday morning.

Only problems were accessibility, need that C-Spanner!!!

Had to take the Turbo and Manifold out in one unit which was very time consuming.

New turbo in, screeching now gone slightly more power but need to watch the coolant and oil levels for the next few days, as lost quite a bit of coolant and a fair bit of oil.

Best part of the weekend was when we took it out for a little run to see if all was OK. As soon as we hit 1800 revs turbo kicked in and gave a pleasant whoosh and power increase. Marvelous!!!

Wife is now happy that she can drive along without seeing everyone clap their hands over their ears.

Cheers
Tony

Just had to have a new turbo fitted due to black smoke from the exhaust.(right after the service as well - just a coincidence sir was the comment made by the garage)

Reconditioned turbo plus installation and the dreaded vat totalled £370 from Bullivants of Derby.

compared to prices being bandied about I now realise what a bargain it was.

But after a new exhaust , MOT, Service, a spot of welding on the drivers seat mounting etc and the turbo almost £1000 has been spent in the last three weeks

Drivers seat felt like a rocking chair - and having had the drivers seat come unstuck in an old rover 214 - its not a very nice feeling when you put your foot on the brake and you end up going backwards rather than slowing the car down.
