(Home) Turbo whistle and zoom

hello... new townie owner here... my question.. i have a turbo diesel townie and it is slow to take off then makes a whistle noise and zoooommm!! it takes nearly 5 seconds to get any power from the engine when i push the gas peddal down... could my turbo be bad??? the whistle noise gets worse when i give it more gas... but it also gives me more power... lots more power... help!

The turbo takes a few revs to come on song, I assume you have an auto box Townie, the turbo does not add power until you get to 16-1700 RPM, thus no power until then & then she takes off, if you want a 'Starsky & Hutch' get away, try holding her on the left foot on the brake & raise the revs a bit then let the brakes off. Still won't be lighting fast, but does help, don't overdo it though otherwise torque converter/autobox will suffer.

As regards your neighbours car, if it's a modern turbo diesel, they are no runiing high noost & fuelling pressures, therefore go really well. If it's a petrol turbo car it might have a dump valve to help stop turbo stall, this tends to give a doooohhhh noise when you back off the throttle on gear change.
Don't bother getting a dump valve for your Townie though, no need for diesels or autos.

Regards Rob.
