(Home) The vanishing water trick

Hi,
Just got a towny 1 and a 1/2 weeeks ago and tryed to go on holiday.left Durham for Fort William 30 mils later the heater went of and 4 mils later the temp whent high and i stoped and put some water in.Deciced it might have been short when I started as I didnt check so kept going.Got to the top of Carter Bar and it did it again so refilled.Twenty mils later and again no water.Refill and arrived at Fort William another 160 miles.Stoped the night and checked in the morning low water filled and decided to come home.Got to within 80 miles of home and again refilled the water.Got home having checked for water in oil and oil in water found none.Temp came up from cold ok so thought it must be the cap, replaced and left for Devon it only took 4 fills to get there.Joined the AA i,m geting worried by now decided to come home and take van back to garage.Refilled the water and got to within 40 miles of home and had to refill again and got home.Took van to garage.I think the radator might be blocked and the man at the garage agreaded so he is going to fit a new one but will this be the end or have I missed something as the expantion full when I took the cap of in Devon befor I filled it up.??

Thanks for reading this and hope you may have some coments good or bad.

Cheers Jim.

Might just be a tiny leak in the system stopping it from drawing a vacuum, or it could be the head gasket. Is it pressurising the system?

what speeds were you driving at....

How much are you filling it up with?
Are you adding antifreeze?
I would have said cap but you changed that (for a toyota one?), next is the tube within the expansion tank, should be stiff and a firm fit on the top.
Still you are getting a rad that will be one less thing to check.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments on the returne from Devon from low revs you could here the water swiching around up to the heater and as long as you heard that then it was find but when you didnt the heater went cold and you had to stop.Only fill it with water and the system seemed to pressurise and if you egnored the cold air from the heater and didnt find any hills you could drive a long way.Speed was 50ish tryed to keep it too 2000rpm it seemed to lose more after you stoped for fuel etc but checking under I could not find any water only dampness on the enging block.
