Nope. the sump has to come off to disconnect the pickup pipe. But that's just a standard lip-seal on the front of the pump- it can be replaced with the pump in-situ...

Thanks Dave if i undo the bolt holding the drive wheel the spindal wont fall inside the engine will it? how doe i get the seal out wiv a screw driver or something. Is it unusual for the pump to need replacing?

The oil pump and relief valve are in the same casting as the crankshaft oilseal so it should be possible to remove without lowering the sump. I had trouble obtaining the correct oil seal for mine but eventualy got a rotor kitpump from toyota No:T04151-64020 for £12.12. This kit contained both rotating parts plus the seal. A bargin! The oil suction pipe conetcts to the engine block so should not be a problem. You will of course have to remove the timming belt and crankshaft pulley.

Sure about that, Mark? the manual is implicit about the need to remove the sump.

But either way, Ron, if you don't want the hassle of removing and then re- gasketing the pump body, there's no reason why you shouldn't do it in-situ. The shaft is captive, the only fun you might have is holding the pulley while you slacken the nut (retorque to 34lbft).
If a screwdriver won't winkle the seal out, pop a self- tapper or two through it...
