(Home) Noisy startup

I have a 2.0 TD Townie (G), when it starts from cold there is a very loud knocking noise.
Strangely after a minute or so, there is an audible click from inside the cab (electronic control of some kind ?)- the nocking then dies right down. ? ? ?

Any ideas ?

Cliff

Yeah it does that. IIRC the click comes from the glowplug secondary relay in the n/s B pillar when the engine has started to warm up.

Cue David for a more technical explanation....

Hmm. Difficult to explain as such. That minute or so period has the glowplugs powered at a low level for emissions control. This it to IMPROVE combustion, so the engine should be smoother... But a. the load on the alternator is high at this time (so the engine is working harder), plus the pump offers additional advance when cold (thanks to the thermo-wax)

A possibility tho, is that the glowplugs are instigating early combustion- any chance of a leaky injector, or the timing being too advanced?

It could very well be normal, you might want to listen to another for comparison...
