(Home) Hiace wagon 2l-te crankshaft pulley removal

Hi there, Hiace Wagon owners!
I thought I should let you know that since my last post - Hiace fanbelts - I have successfully fitted them; and, oh, boy; what a long, involved, fiddly job it was too! No wonder the last time it was attempted - probably in Japan - they only succeeded in changing the the two outer belts (power steering & Compressor). Which is why the two remaining Fan belts were in such a brittle frayed condition; having never been changed during the life of the vehicle. This leads me to think that the timing belt has also never been changed (despite what the seller told me). Bringing me, nicely, on to the main point of this post; the Crankshaft pulley removal. Does anyone know of a suitable removal service tool I could hire for this task, other than the one shown in the Toyota 2L-TE engine repair manual, such not being readily available to joe public? Has anyone done the Timing belt change job, who could offer any advice about the pros and cons; i.e.what to beware of during the process? I hope there is.

Tony. I imagine that the Townace pulley/belt setup is much the same as the Hiace and, when this pulley requires removing, I use a simple home made puller. There will be tapped holes (for the aircon compressor pulley) on the front of the crank pulley, and two of these can be used to bolt up the home made puller. The puller is a simple piece of stout steel with a nut & bolt at it's centre with two further holes (or slots) to take the two bolts securing it to the pulley.
I can send you further details if you wish but, the puller dimensions would have to be checked aganst the dimensions of the Hiace pulley

Thankyou for your reply, John.
I plan to do the job in early September. Until then, I will ascertain the correct dimensions and get something made up ready for the job. If I hit difficulties, then, I'l get back to you. Thankyou for your input. Happy motoring!

hi there , have done the belt change on my hiace - cam & all 4 other belts , found much more room after removing drivers seat & the floor under it - may have been lucky but the crank pulley came off without extracting , just a tug with both hands and away it came , while you have the pulley off check it very carefully - the rubber bonding that holds the 2 grooves onto the main hub of the pulley gives up after a while and you end up with 2grooved part trying to eat the plastic cam belt cover - as mine had done !!! toyota have updated/superseeded the pulley - reason not given by local toyota agent !!
my other family car is a rover mini so room and jamming ya arms in the engine bay is not that unusual. if you want any info drop me a line , cant promice but hay dont hurt to ask ,

Hi there, Grant. Thanks for the tip! I will most definitely check out the rubber bonding, as advised. I take it that yours is the 2.4 2L-TE engine. If so, can you tell me how much you paid for the revised pulley; the part no. and how long you had to wait for it on order? Forearmed is forewarned, I say.
