I would suspect the battery.
Then the imobiliser - does it isolate the ign system?
The ign switch and fuse may need investigation,
there are some breakers by the fuse box so while you are there just reset them.
Next alternator/regulator.
All the things that work do so direct from the battery so it may be a relay?

thanks clive one more point my key snapped in ign a few months ago worked fine so didnt bother fixing it but anything that needs the ign to work is not working so i think it might be ign thats gone will try that.

Do you still press the black button to release the remains of the key, or can you pull it out at any point?
Cos if the button is not pressed and the key turned back that extra notch - flat and possible damaged battery!

can pull key out at any point but always make sure i turn it right back and pull key out.when i got home from work today i ran a wire straight from batt to ign bypassing fuse link and it worked. do you have any idea where the fuse link is i have looked at the batt end and all round the dash.
