(Home) Go to tesco for your insurance

Amazing! I have just saved £500!!!!

My townie was off the road for a few months, got a quote from a Jap import 'specialist' at over £900!! after a stiff drink i called tesco (after i could not find my car on their list) and was quoted a little over £400!

Amazing.

(and i think you get clubcard points!!!)

A lot better but not the best unless you are a 21 year old with 9 points on your licence and no NCB.

I only pay £200 and something, fully comp for my town ace.

Can't remember the name of the company, I think it's called "Lifesure".

Been with them since I first aquired the townie and struggled to get insurance at a reasonable rate.

Steve.

- (#12414) eddie, 9 Aug 04 04:39

Yep, I'm with Liverpool Victoria; just renewed at £187 fully comp. All thanks to info at BOK/Ace answers - you've saved me loads 'o money...Cheers!

- (#12414) Stewart, 11 Aug 04 18:02

Terry, try ringing them, it may still be worth your time; even with the charge for cancelling your Tesco policy. There are a couple of numbers, can't remember what they are, but all the info is on Ace Answers. I had to ring a couple of times before I got a young lady who knew exactly what motor I was talking about.

- (#12414) Stewart, 11 Aug 04 18:07

Try Footman James brokers also, mine costs £258 fully comp which includes breakdown and accident cover. For £34 extra you can have Homecall added. I'm 52 with full no claims.

- (#12414) John N, 12 Aug 04 07:09

Was with Lifesure for the first year... £378 odd.
Footman James this year.... £278 odd, including recovery/repair service. Amazing.

- (#12414) Storm, 13 Aug 04 04:32

Just renewed my insurance on a 1990 Townace Super Extra 2.0L TD, with Liverpool Victoria (0800 220790) £170.03, Fully Comp, protected no claims, legal expenses insurance, windscreen/window glass cover, self/wife, me, 58 years old. They charge NO extra for it being an import and don't require an immobiliser fitted as Tesco did. Give 'em a try - you've nothing to lose!

I have just been in contact with Liverpool Victoria, through their website, and was refused cover because my Townie is automatic. It seems that do not have automatics on their system, only manuals. If it is not on their system they cannot insure me!

- (#12414) Derrick Hale, 26 Aug 04 10:56

Hi Derrick,
Are you the Derrick that turned up at brean?
L&V will insure the automatic Royal Lounge, but anything else has to be manual. Its their rules apparently. Don't rely on the website either, phone them up if yours is a royal lounge and they should offer you cover.

- (#12414) dave Bright (Bournemouth), 26 Aug 04 11:12

hi derrick, i'd try liverpool victoria again - my townace is automatic and i had no problems insuring with them.............

- (#12414) Frank, 27 Aug 04 01:33

i forgot to mention that i got my cover with liverpool victoria over the phone - 0800 220790

- (#12414) Frank, 27 Aug 04 01:35

i was with footman james and their renewall this year was £268 - tried l&v and theirs was £156

guess who i am with???????

- (#12414) Jim Grice, 27 Aug 04 07:57

L + V refused to insure my 92 Townace (new shape) 2LTD super extra MANUAL (Dave B, I had probs here), despite speaking to two different operatives and tel numbers ( listed on this site).I was given the conflicting story that they will only insure if (my manual)is listed as a TDI on my vehicle reg docs.I honestly found L + V very difficult to deal with and common sense sadly lacking. Footman James offered the best price and all in package for me (£206 FC).They were very easy to deal with. I used to be with direct line and saved myself over £150 + a better excess and more.

- (#12414) Marcus (Cornwall), 27 Aug 04 13:40

I even rang L&V back because having gone through all the questions they gave me the quote and I said I will think about it.

When I rang back I questioned the TDI bit - they said it didn't matter as they couldn't carry all the variations on their database as the vehicle was an import and mine was close enough.

my bus is a super extra townace 2.0 litre, manual, turbo, diesel, eight seats with the cool/hot box and six skylights and they were happy.
- (#12414) Jim Grice, 28 Aug 04 12:11

hi jim,

glad you got "sorted" with l&v! (and saved loadsa money too!):-)

re the tdi issue, in my hunt for cheaper insurance i found that it cropped up several times with different companies. regardless of what it says on your registration document, (which is only as accurate as the information given by the person registering the vehicle anyway), all turbo diesels can be classed as tdi as the "i" stands for injection and all diesel engines are injection anyway! :-)

for anyone who thinks that it may present a future problem i would think it would be possible to amend the details on the registration document and notify the dvla..........

- (#12414) Frank (N. Wales), 28 Aug 04 16:52

Actually, TDI is a VW trademark, and the 2C is a "prechamber" or indirect injection engine and so to call it a TDI is both factually incorrect and indeed illegal...

- (#12414) David Miller, 28 Aug 04 16:59

Jim
A further question is do you think an insurance assessor would be inclined to give you any money based on him saying your Townie is 'close enough'to their database.Clearly Direct injection is not the same as indirect injection. Unfortunately the call centre operative and assessor is very unlikely to be one and the same.I wouldnt be happy unless, I had had something in writing.

You may well have saved some money, but is it worth the peace of mind knowing in an accident, you (or anyone elese invloved) may not be covered based on a technicality. (re Dave Miller)

- (#12414) Marcus (Cornwall), 29 Aug 04 02:17

Short of everyone with an imported car turning up at the main offices of an insurance company and asking for a personal quote I would suggest that a "near enough" description is the best you can get.
(I doubt if every insurance company has a database of every variation of every vehicle produced in the world to-date)
- (#12414) Jim Grice, 29 Aug 04 05:01

hi david,

a nice person at l&v actually told me that the tdi in the case of the townace stood for "turbo diesel injection"!! make what you will of that........! :-)
