I've just bought a Hiace Supercustom and everything seems to working apart from the 4WD select button. I can't get the 4WD light on the dash to go out. I've messed around with the diff lock but it still remains on. Any info on what's wrong would be gratefully received. If you could try and keep it simple, without too much techno speak, as I'm only a primary school teacher.
Thanks
Rob

hi there , looked thru the book , sorry , it only tells you what& where the buttons / fuses are , if like most cars the switches for the reversing and 4wd lights are norm fitted to the gearbox in/on the selector lever linkage , you could try - with ignition on but not running- unplug anything that looks like it goes into the g/box near the selector lever -1 plug at a time- had an isuzu trooper and the 4wd switch light was next to the lever as it went into the g/box - but thats isuzu & not toyota , hope it helps

Well, if the transfer case is similar to that in the townie, vacuum is used to pull that box into 4x4 and then the vacuum is applied to the other side of the actuator to go back to 2wd. The 4x4 lamp is operated by a switch on the transfer case- quite far back on the case IIRC.

So...
Check the front hubs are unlocked and you're in neutral to ensure there's no bind in the box, and hunt underneath for a big diaphragm device with two hoses coming from it. It's bolted onto the transfer case. As you have someone operate the control on the dash, vacuum should be applied to one hose then the other- but only for a couple of seconds each as I recall. You should hear the solenoid clicking too. No click= electrical problem, click but no vacuum= problem with valve or hoses...

Thanks for your replies. I've taken David's advice and can hear a feint click when the 2/4 WD button is pressed, so it sounds like the solenoid is working, so where do I go now? It looks like the vacuum is the problem but what valve or hose problems am I now looking at?

Hmm, I had just typed an epistle about the vacuum hose routing on the townie before remembering that you've a Hiace...

Anyway, there should be a small (1/4" or so) vacuum hose coming from the pump, which is probably on the alternator. it'll go to various solenoid valves in the engine bay, but should also head towards the rear of the car. Check it is indeed connected, and if you can trace it back, check you've got a vacuum at the 4x4 valves.

Thanks for your reply David.I've contacted the previous owner and he remembered a similar problem. He's suggested the cause might be a drive belt that's not tight enough. Now, the air con has stoppped working, cab light works but no cold air or change in engine revs, and he says that they are run on the same belt and not enough power is being delivered to pump the vacuum. Could he be right? And if so what belt am I looking for?

Thanks again for any help,
Rob
