(Home) Ace engines...the saga continues

Well - just when you thought it was safe to check out he bulletin board again...The engine that i got from BBC is fine but is apparently an older block which doesn't have a hole in the oil filter housing to release pressure from the engine (or something like that, anyway!) SO, either i need to get hold of an oil filter housing for an older engine block (e.g G reg or before) or the 'mechanic'says he'll have to strip down the entire 'reconditioned' engine in order to drill a hole in to what ever it is.... As you may be able to tell - i haven't got a clue what i'm talking about but if this makes sense to any of you then i'd love some advice... BBC doesn't have the part needed but if anyone else does i'd like it!!!!

I have a spare oil filter housing, but I have no idea what it came off, or its condition, or its age.

I will try to photo it later and email you a copy. If its what you need, your welcome to it.

Thanks Dave...I know that the mechanic seemed very particular about the type of housing that was required...so if you can get a photo of it - that would be fantastic...I am hoping that i will phone him today to find that he has found the part and is fitting it all back together...and then i woke up!!!... Does any one know whether the hole he is talking about can just be drilled without stripping the engine???

Anna: Wight Motors Ltd (Isle of Wight, UK, Toyota dealer) might help on this one. Telephone: 01983-405551 ask for David Coombs (import-friendly Parts Manager). Have all the details from your VIN plate to hand if possible. Ask nicely though, they're there to sell parts not just answer questions.

well, a quick look at the parts cd tells us that the same filter housing is used in ALL 2CT townies. Non- turbos are different. The oil cooler varies in size depending on model tho.
Ah. Gotcha. The manual refers to a relief valve bolted into the block, whereas ALL 2CT townie engines have the valve incorperated into the long tubular stud that retains the oil cooler and filter. Tell your mechanic to set down the drill! He's thinking of Carina/ Camry engines, not townie/ liteace versions...

So that's the answer. Can't you take the filter bracket off your old engine anyway?

sorry dave got a bit confused - are you saying there should be a relief valve incorporated in to the oil filter housing... and if there isn't one does that indicate that the engine isn't a townie/liteace engine?? you can really tell i'm not a mechanic heh??! may be i should forward your note to the mechanic...sounds like you know more than he does!!!! :)

Anna, from my research, some versions of the 2C engine have a filter pressure relief valve screwed into the side of the block. But all versions and years of the 2CT (turbo) as used in the townace have this valve built into the bit that you screw the oil filter onto. Your mechanic should be able to remove this part (a long, hollow threaded stud) and verify that there is indeed a valve in there.

What I'm starting to wonder now is whether or not the engine you received from Bill is actually a 2CT- I wonder if the items your mechanic is referring as different or missing are so because they never were fitted. It'd be a lot of work to convert a 2C to take a turbo...

In a nutshell, if the oil filter housing doesn't point out and down at about 45degrees,and/or the top of the engine doesn't say "turbo", you might just have the wrong engine!

If you could perhaps send me a picture or two of the engine, or even get your mechanic to correspond here?
