I have a cracked exhaust manifold - on top between ports 2 and 3. I would like to try an understand what may have caused it before I do the same to a replacement. I have recently replaced both the main exhaust pipes (also due to cracking rather than simple holes). I am not happy with the new front pipe as it is in direct contact with the oil filter (don't know if it is possible to undo filter). I have also recently boiled the engine while going over a swis pass.
Any suggestions?

They do crack. Why not just get it welded? In theory, you need to preheat and use a special rod, but I just MIG'ed mine and it held together OK.
Oh, and before it goes back on, ensure that you check it for flatness, surfacing as required. The go a bit banana- shaped...
