(Home) Why is the temp gauge still doing this

Hi there all

Just replaced the head on a townie 2.0 diesel.
All professionally done, just had the rad RE-CORED? (I not a mech, so please excuse) while at it the garage replaced the thermostat (not sure if its the right one though) and STILL the temp gauge goes into the RED stays there and then comes down to about 3/4 way, then if a load is put upon the engine back up it goes into the red, then comes down to about 3/4 on the gauge.

Has ANYONE got any ideas as to what causes this??

Cheers people

Stat, gauge and sender, viscous coupling, airlock, injection timing. Take your pick...

It could be an incorrect thermostat. The Toyota stat has an opening of 30mm and aftermarket replacements are only have 25mm opening. If your stat is the smaller one then you will see the temperature rise like this. I have done this and it turned out that the aftermarket stat was also jamming on the receiver plate in the block.
Does the rear heater work? This is also the thermostat bypass, and if its blocked then it will also cause overheating.

All the comments by David and Dave will help you to eliminate the problem. However, I would add that fitting a decent temperature gauge (Dave Mason's alarm type or a Durite) will avoid relying on the notoriously odd standard gauge which Toyota fit. It is well known that this gauge seems to be geared to "around town" motoring and is not able to give the necessary early warning of an overheat situation. Also, even with the correct, 30 mm opening thermostat, there are benefits in one or two 3mm holes drilled in the flange. There is lots of information in the archives re these problems
