(Home) Wiring - ignition immobiliser trip switch

In the old days, to install a simple ignition immobiliser to a car, you installed a wire from the ingnition coil via a trip switch (hidden in the car somewhere) to earth.
With a new car with electronic ignition, can this be done (without damaging the electronic ignition system)?
If so, onto what wire do I have to connect to earth via a trip switch

Simple way would be to put a switch on the main live feed to the ECU. However this may induce a fault code in the ECU such as 'battery voltage low', this may also result in the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminating on the dashboard. This fault code may then need to be removed using diagnostic code reading equipment. You could also cut the earth supply to the injectors to stop them working as a security measure. Or even cut the supply to the fuel pump relay or starter relay.
