(Home) Seized steering belt tensioning pulley bearing

Symptom: Smell of Burning Rubber and a horrendous Squealing noise, stiff steering....

Cause: The bearing in the Steering Pump belt Tensioning Pulley had completely disintegated; seizing the pulley in place.

Question: anyone got a spare pulley/bearing I could aquire, or know of a good source of such? Local Scrap Dealers came up blank.

Dave, the power steering pump doesn't have an idler...

Hold on a mo... thinking...

Is yours a petrol engine?

Ah-ha. Y- series engine has an idler. 44350-28011

Used in all Y-series townie/ liteace/ spacecruiser derivatives, and also in certain Hiace and Hilux models. That might broaden your search a bit. You might also be able to press the unit apart and repace the bearing. Depends whether the pulley is riveted around the bearing, or just pressed onto it...

Yep Petrol it is

Definitely has an idler/tensioner, at least thats what I removed earlier :oD

thanks for the advice will broaden my options a bit for replacements.

Managed to bodge a repair and pack it with Copper grease, but shouldn't think it'll last more than 20-30 miles. very noisy too .
