Don't know if there's any change after the facelift, but the pump changed from a splined pulley to a keyed one in 1990. The pumps interchange, but the offset of the pulleys differ so the belt won't line up. There's just enough length in the shaft that you can fabricate a spacer to space the pulley of an older pump out to suit the newer application. What's wrong with yours anyway? They can be rebuilt- if you don't fancy it yourself, try sending it to

and i've told you which one. post 1990 townies have the pump with a keyway...

now if you want to be really picky there's a difference between 2wd and 4x4 pumps, different pressure setting.

if you're buying new (and you'd be a. rich and b. foolish imo)toyota part numbers are:
2wd.. 44320-28081
4x4.. 44320-28091

thanks david, but ive also been told by the fella a bbc spares that it will be a spline one,so now im confused, help!!!!!!!! it is a 2wd

Hmm.
It pains me to say it, but Bill's right. Paradoxically enough, I'm the reason he knows there's two types...

Anyway, my fault. I looked at the picture on the cd, and it shows the later version as having the key. But when you ask it for the part number of the key, it says applicable to earlier models only

Hi,
Following on from the above, can anyone help.......?

I have a 1991 4WD Turbo Diesel Townace also in need of a Power Steering Pump. I have twin belts to the alternator, so am I right in thinking that I need the Pump with the spline fitting (as it has got the longer shaft?) or is it the other way around and I need the Wood Ruff Key fitting??

I've read various threads here and on ACE Answers - but I'm still confused!

Best way to be sure is to pull the pulley off...

Thought that might be the case!

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet, take the townie off the road and have a look before I can get my replacement part.

Does anyone know how to pacify two toddlers who will be a tad upset at not getting their daily ride in the townie but will have to suffer a 'normal' car instead??

I'll let you know how I get on!

In order to see which type you only need to remove the nut securing the pulley. You can probably do this from underneath without removing floor etc.

Well time was short with a planned trip to France looming and pump was needed. So went ahead and ordered the Spline type which turned out to be the right one!

Pump and Belts replaced, Townie back on the Road and trip to France went ahead as planned (Me, my Wife, 3 Toddlers and Granny). 2000 miles later ... Wine Rack is now full again, and Townie performed faultlessly!
