(Home) Expected life of the town ace turbo diesel

I live in Canada and considering purchasing an 89 Town Ace van with 175 000 kms on it. What is a common service life of these engines, and are they fairly high maintenance?

My previous Toyota expereince is with an old gas (petrol) pickup that I have put 340 000 kms on, bringing the total to about 460 000. It has needed a timing chain, 2 clutches, alternator, starter, radiator and one brake caliper so far, other than oil changes etc.

What can I expect from a Towm Ace? It almost seems that head problems are a regular occurance, which would be quite expensive over here.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

That depends entirely on maintenance.

In theory a diesel will outlast a petrol, but if not maintained the diesel will suffer more than a petrol.

The head problem is probably exagerated a bit here - people mostly post on here with a problem, so the impression is that there are more problems then there actually are.

Best bet is to get it thoroughly checked out by a specialist small diesel mech before you part with the cash, and then be diligent with the servicing and maintenance.
