(Home) Unknown device behind instrument panel, speed warning

Whilst replacing bulbs at the rear of the instrument panel,I noticed a " metal box" fixed onto the back of the PCB. It had one black wire to it, and a pinkish wire that had been cut - the other half was still connected to a screw more or less directly behind the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge seems to have been working OK. Can anyone tell me what this device is? and should I re-connect?

"Ding!"
It's the famous 60-odd mph alarm...

Dave
Sounds intriguing. Now I've found it, it's a must to test it out. Presumably it goes Ding ding ding ding if 60ish mph is exceeded.Does it by any chance also send a message to the local Polizie so that they can issue a speeding ticket !!!

No just drives you nuts when you exceed 100km. It's the first thing that owners do when they get one of these vehicles - remove the bloody thing! Personally I think Toyota connected it up to the wrong gauge, should be connected to the temp :-)

The battery on my Toyota HiAce keeps running out of charge after 2 weeks. I've taken it to the auto-electricians but they can't find any problem with the van. All they can tell me is that the battery is charging and the alternator is fine. Help!

Lomi

please start a new thread when posting a question. It gives your post a higher profile and is more likely to get answered.

With regard to your question - are you turning the ignition key fully anti-clockwise to the off position before removing the key? You may have a button at the side of the lock which needs depressing to release it.
If not then you are using power and will drain the battery.

Barry, as Ian's advice above, please start a new "thread" when asking a new question. This way will ensure that your query gets noticed. There is no complete workshop manual available (in English) but, if you are fluent in Japanese or Russian, you can get hold of one.
There is the superb engine manual, Code RMO25E, available from your local Toyota dealer, and costing less than a tenner. This tells you all you want to know about the engine, lube system, cooling, electrics etc and, combined with the archives on this forum, who needs anything more ?
