(Home) Burning oil

My recentley acquired townie appears to have a taste for oil. It gets through about 0.5L for every 300-500 miles, the smoke it creates as a result is terrible.
Power also seems very low, hopefully this is curable as I love the vehicle. Any thoughts greatfully received!
Thanks
Rich

Blown turbo?

When I had these symptoms in my 2CT it was a broken (No. 1) piston which I think a compression test would've revealed and I regret not investigating earlier and doing a planned repair rather than having an awkward breakdown while on vacation. The smoke was mainly on startup, would drop to barely noticeable after a couple of minutes.

Another symptom was that pulling the out engine oil dipstick, or pulling off the breather hose (small rubber hose from the valve cover on top of the engine to the large air hose running across over the back of the engine from the air filter) while the engine was running released a jet of oily mist caused by excessive crankcase pressure - only I'm not sure how much there should be of that normally.

The final symptom was a loud knocking, not continuous, just at certain speeds. I think it depended whether the cracked-off section of piston settled into it's natural place or was out-of-postion and bashing the inlet valve - the end of which got bent. At this knocking stage the smoke did NOT die away after a couple of minutes! However the engine power was not noticeably less than usual - maybe I just got used to it over the year or so that the oil consumption was rising, or I didn't press it so hard because it sounded so sick.

Note, this is only a "thought". Don't jump to conclusions.
