(Home) MOT and sidelights

Any advice please?

My Townace (H reg Royal Lounge) has just failed its M.O.T. because:

(1) The front side lights are within the yellow plastic lens that runs the full width of the vehicle. The examiner says that the side lights must show a white light (the local police say that he is correct). What is the easiest way around this problem?

(2) The rear anti-roll bar 'drop link' top mounts are worn (both sides). Has anyone managed to obtain and replace these?

I am a fairly competent amateur DIY mechanic.

Thanks.

1. you can generally rewire the sidelights to the "cornering light" location

2. The "bobbin" bushes are easy enough to replace. p/no 90385-11021, or at a pinch, remove, wrap a turn or two of insulating tape around, reinstall...

Dave

If I manage to get the corner light lens off, is there a housing for a bulb already there - or have I misunderstood you? Thanks.

What year is yours?

But generally, if the car hasn't been modded to UK spec, the corner lights will still be working. Otherwise, there'll either be a hole you can bayonet the bulbholder into, or the whole kit and caboodle will be there with the wires cut...

Hello everyone

I have a 1992 Toyota Townace auto 2.0l Turbo Diesel, 2 wheel drive. I have had it for 2 years and it has been superb.

I am getting rumbling noise from the rear axle which becomes noticeable above mph and quite noisy at 70. It is getting worse. It is not a whining noise so I hope it is wheel bearings and not the differential. However I can detect no movement in the bearings when I jack up the van and rock the wheels. There is some degree of roughness in both wheels when I spin them.

I suspect wheel bearings and I will change them before worrying about the diff. Has anyone changed rear wheel bearings on this or a similar vehicle and if so I would be pleased to recieve a protocol or at least a note of where the pitfalls are and if any special puller is needed to get the bearing races off.

Yours in anticipation

Russell

Russell,

You should have started a new thread.

Not done a townace but have done a Spacecruiser. I suspect they are the same.
First problem was pulling the shaft, had to get a slide hammer to shock it out. second was getting the old bearing off - angle grinder best tool ever invented for that. Third and the hardest getting the new one on, the outer bearing cup was a right pig to get on the inner bearing has to be heated in oil and slides on -NOT, it jams half way. At this point I gave up and went to a local garage who pressed the outer one fully home ( a fraction but a fraction more that I could get it!), and then the inner one on for me. Make sure you fit the retainer and gaskets with the notches aligned.
While you are there fit a new oil seal.
