(Home) Blown head gasket

My townie came to grief on A1M last sunday. It looks like the head gasket is kaput and there is no compression. The AA man poured in 4 litre of water and it must have collected in the exhaust because lots of water came out of the exhaust pipe when the van was being loaded onto a trailer.

Can anyone help with what I should do? Replace the exgine, scrap the van (bear the thought!!!) or ....? Anyone knows of a good and trustworthy mechanic in the Guildford to look at the damage. Mine is a H reg Master Surf 2.0 Diesel Auto 4wd.

I am what you can call mechanically challenged so all advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Jit

Jit,
Water going straight through not good, no compression on all cylinders?
I fear it may well be more than just the gasket.
The only way to find out is to remove the head, have it inspected and tested, if all ok new gasket(s) and refit. If the head if cracked it will need to be replaced.
Now you have to make the decision -
1. Put the Ace in for head removal and inspection and possible head replacement.
2. Put the Ace in for head replacement and hope there is no other problems.
3. Put the Ace in for a replacement import engine that has been removed from a vehicle in Japan and shipped over.
4. Put the Ace in for a replacement overhauled engine.
5. Sell it to me for £5

In my opinion option 5 is best. I would then try option 1 and take it from there. This would of course depend on funds......

Sorry to hear of your problems. Yes it does sound a bit terminal, and it doesn't help when somebody starts taking the mick out of your pride & joy.
I think the best option is for you to keep an eye and ear out for a decent second hand engine that perhaps one of the kind souls on here may be able to locate for you. Or spend fortunes repairing the one you have or spend a bigger fortune on a imported replacement. With fitting at a garage you will soon be wondering if it is worth it.

I bid a tenner !!

Why Mr Mucklow you mercenary b****** and cheap skate! I'm shocked to think you would try and take advantage of someone else's misfortune - it must be worth at least £20.

My opinion? Go for Clive's (2). UK cylinderheads or API engines for a recon head.

Look in Ace Answers, Maintenance, Repairers, especially the entry " * Repairers ".

For a mechanic with no Ace experience, all the knowledge is in the RM025E engine repair manual (about £10), a printout of "Engine Bay Access, Removing floor-pan" from Ace Answers, and a few other threads such as for disconnecting the exhaust manifold.
