(Home) Black smoke & no movement

I was taking my family out for the day to the beach and was about 60 miles from home on the motorway, half way up a hill my town ace began to lose power then my daugther told me that black smoke was coming out of the back. When I looked around I could hardly see out of the rear window because of the smoke. I pulled over to the hard shoulder and found that I was was at the enterance of a service station and was lucky enough to be able to roll into the car park. When I stopped the engine cut out completly and when I tried to start the engine again I got nothing at all. As any boby got any ideas what it could be or as any boby had the same problem? I would be greatful for any help as I have been told it could be a number of things, but every body I have asked have said they don't known much about town aces.

I would initially get a compression test done to establish if engine damage (piston/bore etc.)has occured.

Yes, a compression test is a sensible step.

Not restarting is significant, but what vehicle are we talking about? Diesel? Auto? My 2CT had a broken piston, very messy, loads of smoke but it would still start and run. Plenty of background in Ace Answers under Faults/Smoke.

Was there any associated noise? Temp gauge movement?
What about history? Oil or coolant consumption rising previously? How confident are you that the cooling system was full?

If this is diesel it might be worth checking for fuel starvation prior to a compression test. Asssuming you didn't actually run out of diesel, blocked fuel filter? air leak into fuel pipes? See if fuel is being pumped to the injectors.
