i found that this light comes on if the rear door is not locked. press your door lock inside the car when all doors are shut and the central locking will lock all the doors. This sometimes fails if the rear door is not shut hard.

The tailgate latch gets a fair coating of road crud/exhaust smoke, this may make the mechanical working sieze up and the electrical connnections can corrode. May be a mixture of both causing problems.

Yes, as explained in Ace Answers, it's the sensor on the tailgate lock, rather than any door not being closed, that annoys us. Reach back and lock the tailgate manually to verify this.
Can anyone provide easy instructions how to disconnect the tailgate lock sensor so that it becomes purely a "door open" warning light.
