(Home) Power steering blet replacement

Hi,
my power steering belt and alternator belt broke, so i thought i would change all 4 so i got the belts.

i have taken everthing apart at 5pm last night, seat off ect found all the tention bolts but the 2 middle ones are too close together to put the power steering belt between, can someone please throw some light on this.

Do i have to remove 1 of the middle ones? if so how?

Thanks

Michael

Uh, if you're talking about a diesel, the p/s belt is the FRONT one, the multi-vee belt. If the pump is slackened off fulley and the belt doesn't fit, it's the wrong belt...

Now the aircon belt is the rearmost one, the one with the idler pulley. You gotta slacken the nut in the middle of the pulley before you can wind the adjuster back. (bolt pointing downwards in front of the sump)

Hope that helps you.

Hi,
yes my town ace is diesel, the problem is the power steering belt. loosened off the idler pully no problem but can't get the belt between the 2 middle pulleys, The gap is to small.

Thanks

We seem to be at cross purposes here. If your Townace is a later type, with four belts in total. The fan/Alternator pulley is a "double" pulley, carrying two belts. As David mentions, the two other belts are the outer belt for the P/S pump which runs on a pulley bolted to the face of the main crank double pulley.. The Aircon belt is the rear belt of the four. If your Townace is an earlier model, the Fan/Alternator pulley is a "single" pulley, carrying only one belt, therefor three belts in total. On the double pulley, there is no provision for mounting another belt between the two tandem, coupled pulleys. When the power steering belt broke, did it, somehow, take the front pulley with it? This would be unusual but, possibly, not unheard of.

Ah. Hang on a mo. While you're still wrong in calling that the p/s belt (honestly, it's the aircon compressor on the passenger side of the engine...), I think I know what you're talking about. With the two alternator belts off, you've still got to wiggle the new belt pretty hard to get it in between the cambelt cover and the alt. pulleys.
Any chance the timing cover is slack, or indeed that the belt you purchased is of a bigger profile/ section than is correct- there are at least two sizes of "V" in common useage...

Yes you have to be quite rough but I take that idler pulley off to get the belt off. Usually the idler assembly falls down but it's pretty simple and worth inspecting and cleaning before putting it back. With the belt back on the two main pulleys I find that from above I can just reach to hold the tensioning slider in position while putting the idler pulley back on to it, but it could be done from underneath.
