(Home) Second hand turbo

Hi.
Just wondering if any of you kind folk can help me i have a 1991 2-axle-rigid body super extra 2litre turbo deisel townace with a squeeling turbo. apparently according to the mechanic the bearings on the turbo have worn out and the turbo now needs replacing. he said its going to cost me 500quid for him to fit a second hand one with 1 months gaurantee.
Firstly is this a fair price, secondly is my turbo a 2ct or a 3ct as i have no idea about cars at all.and thirdly does anyone know any good mechanics/garages that will do this job for me in the wirral/merseyside area.
hope you can help me the squeeling is getting very embarrising!!

I used a site called 24/7 spares...http://www.247spares.co.uk/ last night and i have had 5 different garages ring me with turbos for sale 2 at 150 quid, 2 at 100 quid and the one i have just ordered for 90 quid inc pack+posting and 3 months gaurantee..now all i have to do is find a garage to fit it. needless to say iam glad i dident pay 500 quid to get the job done.
fingers crossed the turbo is going to be ok! i will let you know how i get on with the rest.

i have a 2ltr turbo diesel townace with a smoke screen problem at start up and when i stop at traffic lights or roundabouts cant even see out the back is how bad it is.i have just fitted a new crankshaft pulley which fell off but managed to get the new one to fit, but when i started up after doing the change i still had the smoke problem with a puddle of oil coming out of the exhaust, also the engine runs lumpee and a hissing noise coming from the little square box next to the vaccum which clamps onto the side of the turbo air intake pipe. can anybody please confirm that my problem is the turbo seals ro even turbo is naff thank you steve...

Dont know much about it sorry steve, but there is no smoke problem (YET) with turbo, just a terrible squeeling noise when the turbo actually kicks in!

Steve,
Hissing likely to be air/vacuum escape, lack of vacuum may lead to over fuelling, over fuelling will give you black smoke. Have a go at stopping the hiss first.

Jon, with the second hand turbo you need to make sure they have delivered the right part. If not you need to deal with it quickly to change the part - if you gave your vehicle particulars perhaps someone can tell you what part to expect.
The other thing you want to do as quick as possible is do some health checks eg propeller spinning freely, pressure flap operate correctly. Perhaps someone can sugggest a checklist or is there one already on the archives?
Finally the price quoted by the mechanic sounds not too off the wall for a professional outfit - it is a pretty time consuming job and the guarantee should have included the same labour again if the turbo turns out to be faulty - i.e. he takes the risk. I would expect you to receive similar quotes for fitting less what you've paid for parts. But now you are responsible for the part and will have to pay again for labour to sort out a faulty turbo - there may also be disputes as to the responsibility for failure & for costs. You could try and get the mechanic to accept responsibility for the turbo (he might laugh!). If you find other mechanics are disappointing in their quotes you could go back to the first one and say you accept his price but "look! I've got the turbo cheap & with 3 months guarantee, just take it off the price". If he knows you he might be willing to take on the responsibility for the part.

Well I've gone on a bit, I hope it's helpful in preparing you for the worst which may never happen!! Let us know how you get on and I'm sure the guys here will offer advice. I hope it goes well for you.
