Doug, from what you say I would look at the choke system first, I assume you have checked that the air filter is clean?
There are several different distributer types fitted to these engines. My old one had a IIA type, and had a vacuum pipe that needed to be disconnected first. Connect light to front cylinder, timing marks are on the plate behind the crankshaft pully, which has a nick in it as the pointer.
8 degrees BTDC @ idle is what you want.
I found it easier to remove the floor pan to get a good view of the distributor, and made adjustment, which is by undoing the mount bolt and turning the distributor, a lot less of a struggle.
Found it far easier to get the car tuned, as they also set the emissions correctly.
Best of luck.

Right, I've got the manual but my scanner will not scan. Ist time I've tried to use it after loading XP SP2!
If you have bought and matched a condenser to that fitted you have what Toyota call a conventional distributor, with separate coil?
Let me know what you have got before we proceed.

still trying to find it, its not located inside the distributor, so , obviosly, it's external, just trying to find where, no wire on new condensor, it takes a female lead from somewhere, still looking, will let u know
