(Home) Overheating

Since I flushed the cooling system my TownAce 2ltr SuperExtra 4WD, has started to overheat. I removed and checked the Thermostat, and added 2x3mm holes as suggested in some archives. Until I did this car did not overheat other than on long hills, is this just an air lock or do I need to fit a new thermostat.

as a follow up too above, when Ace had got hot (just before alarm went off) decided at tick over to see if I could stop cooling fan turning and could with ease even with finger, would this be the problem, if so can the fan be set to run at engine speed until i can obtain a replacement as it is used daily by wife who will blow it up before pulling over.

To try to lock the viscous hub is a messy and difficult job and is not recommended. Either the existing hub has lost it's fluid or, the thermo coil, on the front of the hub, has ceased to operate and is not allowing the internal ports to open, therebye giving the neccessary "drag" to turn the fan properly when the cooling system is hot. A test at tickover is not too reliable, as the thermo device requires hot air, being pulled through the radiator, to operate correctly. This is a big fan and, at tickover, it will rapidly cool the contents of the radiator, and, in turn, the thermo controlled ports will close, giving the impression of too much slippage. Also, the viscous fluid relies on centrifugal force to transfer it to the outside, "locking" chamber The best course of action is to check the thermo coil (a hairdryer will show if it is operating) and check to see if the hub has lost it's fluid through the seal between the two halves of the hub. It does sound as if the hub is due for replacement but, careful and low speed driving should give enough cooling between your investigation and repair or replacement of the hub

As you have just been working on the cooling system I would look for air in the system.....it doesn't take much air to get the temp rising....

Steve,
I think you may just need to give the system a good burp. May be a good idea to drain and refill, slowly.
If you still have problems I have a spare fan that you can try.

Thanks Clive fan works OK, smoke turned out to be fuel filter, appeared to be 1/2 full of water. Starting fault was the glow plug relay behind the drivers seat have repaired it for now will have to get replacement. Will see you at weekend, by the way I seem to have disconnected idle up some how whilst pulling wiring for glow plugs , will search archives before asking further.
