hi i have a 1990 4wd townace royal lounge 2 litre turbo diesel. just recently (funnily enough after a service in a local garage) i noticed the 4wd light would not come on when selecting and 4wd did not work. i tried low range lever which would not shift and selecting fee wheeling hubs and moving backwards and forwards made no difference. any ideas anyone is this likly to be an electrical fault ?

The 4WD light indicates that 4WD is actually engaged, not that it is just selected. Sometimes you have to wait half a minute for the 4WD to engage. I don't know why, whether things have to line up or just get a bit sticky in cokder weather. So give it a bit longer.
Could be electrical but electrics operate a vacuum valve in the door pillar in front of the sliding door. The vacuum operates the 4WD. During a service it's more likely that the vacuum pipes than the electrics have been disturbed. Does the idle-up work (test with heater running) and does the idle speed increase with a/c selected? - these both use the same bit of the vacuum circuit (see Ace Answers for details).
Let us know what you find.

Probably find they have disturbed the vacuum pipe that runs past the oil filler cap, it pushes in to the fitting under the hose from air filter to turbo, this loss of vacuum will prevent idle up, A/c idle up & $wd from working.

Or the joint between the hose and the hard pipe just behind the fuelfilter...

you are both bang on - a small rubber pipe connected to a multiconnector overe rear of engine was dislodged now reconnected and 4WD working fine Thanks chaps. Martin
