i am fitting a new gear box to my townie its a 1988 4 wd auto des.on the new gear box at the very back there is a small black box about 4ins. square it looks like a vacuum valve with two connectors on it to take a small bore pipe this box is not on the one i have taken out does it have to be connected up if so to what 0r can i change the end plate any info on this would be a god send thanks

I think thats for the 4WD transfer box.
If yours if 2WD then I suspect you can just swop the end plates over?

Early 4x4s had the front drive actuated by a cable setup whereas later ones have that vacuum assembly.

Don't know whether you can interchange the end, the selectors look different internally. Might have to swap transfer cases complete...
