(Home) Engine for re-build

i am changing the engine in my 1988 turbo des.4x4 auto gear box, so i have the old engine and gear box,i would like to re build it for a spare i dont know whats wrong with it but it did over heat and just before it gave up the ghost it gave one hell of a load bang pauline thought she had been shot up the arse (her words). now it is out i have had a spanner on the pully and i can only turn it a small distance anti clockwise and it makes a clunking noise at the top end of the engine, i havnt a clue where to start but if someone out there is willing to take the job on i am all for it i live in north wales not far from chester i also have a gear box that neads loking at , anyone got any idea of the price to rebuild the engine.
thanks

I'd take the plastic can belt cover off at the front/top of the engine and see if you have a cam belt in place.
If not then suspect the valves and piston(s) have collided, possible valve/head/cam shaft/piston replacement.
If yes then suspect a piston/con rod/crankshaft problem.
You won't know until it is taken apart as to what is needed to be done and the likely cost.
