I've answered the question already in a nother post, but that actuator is used to select 4x4 on late (mid 88-on)townies. Yours must be the pre-88 model with 4x4 selection on the transfer lever, no?

Those fittings connect to a pair of solenoid valves in the pillar infront of the n/s rear wheel, and are switched by a button on the dash.

I'm sure you could do without the gubbins by ensuring the unit is in 2wd mode- as I recall, the actuator locks into a mode at each end of it's travel. But for safety, I'd run a vacuum hose to the 2wd side of the diaphragm and leave it there. You could then nip underneath and swap ports if you ever needed 4x4...

Anything more complex than that and you might as well just fit all the valves and wiring, but you'd have to sort out your own switch- the earlier dash doesn't have a location for it.
