(Home) Rear heater controls

I have a bog standard 2wd Townie, 1990.

I sat in the back today whilst my wife drove and noticed that there was no warm air coming from the heater, only cool air.

I did fiddle with the controls to the right of the middle row of seats, but that changed nothing.

Can anyone tell me what I should do to get warm / hot air from the rear heater, before I think about cleaning out the matrix etc.

The rear heater feed & return pipe forms a bypass within the cooling cicuit, ie, bypassing the thermostat. I would suspect that there is an airlock at the heater or that the heater matrix needs cleaning out. You can take off the flow and return pipes and connect them together with a short piece of 15mm copper, run the engine for a while and see if the complete pipe heats up. This will show if you have a good coolant flow. The matrix can be flushed out, carefully, with a hose pipe at low pressure/volume while the unit is in situ. It is at a low point in the cooling system and will be a location where debris does collect. Others might like to comment but I don't think that the rear heater control, unlike the front heater, activates a water valve. I think it operates an air flap which allows blown air to pass through, or bypass, the matrix

Ace Answers may help ...

I have a problem with Ace Answers. I get no menu structure on the left hand side.

I get nothing there at all.

I am assuming you are referring to IE and the latest sp2 update which does cause some problems.

I am guessing that it may be seeing the menu structure as popups, so I will see if I can disable something to get it to show.

Ok, I have managed to access the info using the text only method.

I am just a little confused.

There is a rear matrix?

How do I remove it to clean it?

As my Townie is a 2ltr diesel auto, I assume I have 2 radiators at the front?

One which is obvious and one that lays flat under the foot area at the front of the vehicle?

Only 1 heater matrix for the front, which is situated just off the floor under dash?

Have I got all that right?

If so, I have to decide whether to clean the system out or leave it until my trip to disneyland Paris is over and done with. I don't want to risk causing any air locks etc with the holiday approaching.

I don't get any overheating, but the heaters are not worth having at the moment.

Also, for probably the last year, the temp has only been registering a third of the way, rather than at the half way point as it did during the first couple of years I had it.

But I stress that I do not get any overheating problems, probably the opposite.

Steve,
you won't have 2 cooling radiators with 2wd, only the 4wd automatics have a second horizontal radiator under the floor.

It might be worth checking the controls in the back because it has been known for the cable clips to work loose. If this happens they wont operate the flaps properly.

Your temperature gauge only reading 1/4 is not usual and may need to be investigated further.

Sounds like your thermostat may be stuck open, or someone may have left it out altogether.

The rear matrix is under the larger hatch under the carpet on the hump behind the driver's seat.

As for the little folders ... I don't think it's a popups issue ... last week I altered their javascript to work in Firefox and I wondered if they would stop working in older versions of IE. So Paul is right, I can't do much about incompatibility with a browser/OS unless I know what it is.

I think I will leave well alone until I return from Paris. I don't want to jeopardise the holiday.

As for my Townie not having a second radiator that lies flat under the foot area.

There is something there that resembles a radiator of sorts. What is it?

A/C rad, you will also have one in front of the main engine rad.

Ok, thanks for all the advice.

I will leave it alone until after the holiday.
