(Home) Light knocking noise and idling gone up to 1500rpm

I have a Lite-Ace 2.0L Diesel Auto
Over the last 2 weeks an alarming light knocking noise
has developed from the engine, at first it was only at
certain revs. now its all the time and today the
engine revs at tickover shot up to 1500rpm. throttle cables and linkages all look fine. Can anybody point
me in the right direction of a good garage or mechanic
that knows these vehicles in the Surrey area (Wallington) cheers I await with desperation

Before you drive the car any further lift up the driver's seat and have a good look at the crankshaft pulley. There are quite a few instances of this falling off and causing an awful lot of damage when doing so. The first sign of anything happening is often vibration at low revs.

I recently had a similar problem; in my case the pulley didn't fall off but the rubber joining the hub to the rim just came unstuck. I too had previously noticed excessive vibration, often while reverse parking and sometimes when going above about 65mph. Because the townie handles a bit like a bus it was all too easy to dismiss it as "something that buses do".

There is a lot more in the archive about this under pulleys and belts.

My 2c has its vacuum punp on top of tappet cover. when worn as most do, they sound like a knock, getting worse in hot weather and slow driving, better with air flow across engine at speed. loss of vacuum hose somewhere will raise rpm. Vacuum punp can go for years rooted, youll just have to put up with the noise. Diagnosis of noise can be done with a stethascopy thingy or long handled screwdriver placed gently in your lughole. Good luck and attend to noises sooner or else..... you pay
