(Home) Vacuum pipes query

hi again have read and studyed ian dunse picture, instructions but cant seem to find out where the pip[es go from vacuum vavle "J" mine as 3 ports,2pipes close together and the 3rd on the right as you look at it loops up to "K" which is like in the picture but where do the other 2 pipes connect please anybody thanks steve

The EGR solenoid valve "J" has three ports, yes. But the end one *should* have a little airfilter jobbie on it.

Anyway, concensus is to delete the EGR anyway, so feel free to stuff a golf tee or some other plugging implement into the vacuum feed going to the valve. You can forget about that link hose to "K" as well...

Since having the head replaced, 4WD isn't engaging, and I can't see the second of the 2 vac pipes that are supposed to come over the engine, according to the vac pipes diagram and description in Ace Answers. I'm sure it was there before - my 4WD drive worked, anyway! The author of the Ace Answers explanation says the 4WD pipe might run through to the dash, but he doesn't seem sure.
Where should it start from? The pump on the alternator? I want to sort it in case it freezes over winter - any tips?

You shouldn't have disturbed any of the vac hoses other than the one over the top of the engine, doing a head job. Are idle-up and aircon idle-up working?

If they are, you might find it easiest to trace this one forwards- the pipe from the rear of the car rises behind/ below the fuel filter, a flexible hose linking that to the vacuum supply that feeds the solenoid valves beside the aircleaner.

If the idle-up isn't working either, then check from the pump back.

Remember that a vacuum leak will likely disable the whole system- even forgetting to reconnect the EGR valve (for example) will probably result in the 4x4 failing, as the vacuum won't get to where it's meant to be...

From your answer,David, it seems there should be only one pipe, not two as I thought, going over the engine - which there is. I think it is connected to the pump, but I didn't actually check when I last had the floor off a couple of weeks ago.

The idle-up isn't working, no, nor is the air-con, but the latter needs re-gassing I think.

As for your comments about a leak in the system, I was wondering what the EGR is, since I saw several references to it in Ace Answers. Is it a black, inch long, 3/4 inch diameter cylindrical gizmo that fits onto the end of one of the vac pipes? I only ask because since coming back from the head job, there's one pipe with a bolt jammed in the end which definitely wasn't so before, and the above described object recently fell onto my head while I was replacing the starter motor, having apparently been lodged in the wiring somewhere round there. I daresay the bolt isn't a great fit, so there could be a leak there....

Might be part of the problem if it was put in the supply pipe to the EGR solenoid valve rather than it's feed to the EGR valve itself.

You're just going to have to be methodical unfortunately. Pull the hose off at the alternator, check for vacuum at that nipple, reconnect, check at "T" near injection pump etc etc. Whether by leak or blockage, you aren't getting a vacuum at the solenoid valves for idle-up, so it's likely the problem is around one of the "T"s...
