(Home) Main engine fan ruined by locking viscous coupling

I recently had my fan converted to direct drive - my (ex!) mechanic thought it would do a better job of cooling than the viscose coupling. I had seen a posting by none other than Dave Miller warning against this, but when I raised doubts, these were confidently rebutted. 2 weeks, later, fan shaft flies out of timing belt cover housing at speed on the M1. Crunch. I won't ignore your warnings again, Mr Miller, honestly... Meantime, I'm looking for spares - timing belt cover and fan (I've got a working viscose coupling anyway)- oh yes, and a radiator cowling. Can I pull the cover and fan off a Carina 2ct engine, or am I restricted to G reg 4WD Townies or similar?

Carinas are front wheel drive, with a different fan setup. The alloy cover on the engine is blank, no fan mount.
No, you can take the alloy cover/ bearing off any 2-CT townace derivative. The fan and rad cowling on the other hand MUST come from a 4x4, as the radiator differs in shape and size.

Firstly, well, shoot the mechanic, anyone should know that the fan is not set up to handle full engine speed like that.

Secondly, I have a fan surround ducting & full viscous coupling & fan setup, which you can purchase from me if you wish, give me an offer.

Can't help with the timing belt cover though.

Let me know, I'm in West London.

Regards Rob.

I have to do a search through my less than tidy workshop but, I might be able to help with the other items. Please advise if you are still looking for them and confirm that you require the aluminium fan mounting bracket and/or the top and bottom, plastic, belt covers.

Many thanks for info about parts and offers of same. This site has proved its worth yet again, as I received an offer for all 3 parts the same night I posted the message! Have since received and fitted them, and did the 50 mile trip home today on M-way with no apparent problems. My Mum and Dad's neighbour (I got towed to their place and fixed it there) asked if I'd got it going, and when I affirmed, he said, "Til the next time, eh!" Cheerful so and so. Maybe he's owned a Townie in the past....
All the best, Raheem
