(Home) Maintenance questions

Hello

well the just acquired Townace has failed it's MOT and is now awaiting parts to pass....

In anticpation of this I have bought the normal servicing parts and have a few questions on general maintenance. The car is a 1991 Townace 2.0TD, 2wd manual. I have done some simple servicing myself on other cars in the past but do not have a lot of mechanical experience.

Oil: what oil is recommended? Is 15W/40 enhanced mineral TD oil ok? How much does it take?

Fuel filter: have looked around on this forum but not found clear instructions how to change the fuel filter. Probably overlooked something, any more infrmation welcome.

Coolant: have found the general instructions on how to change the coolant on townace.com which seem pretty comprehensive. When I changed the coolant on another car in the past the system had to be bled afterwards at various bleeding points, is that the case with this engine as well or just get the air out via the radiator? Is it ok to use a normal (non Toyota) coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water?

thanks

See Ace Answers > Maintenance > Filters > Filter, fuel filter.

Oil - some debate on this, I use fully synthetic, with a change time of 5000 kms. My view is the engine is the heart and as with your own body, give it the best!
Whatever oil bulk buying can save £'s.

Coolant fill very slowly, the system should then burp any air out after running, top up at both the filler and the expansion tank, check the levels as often as you can, once satisfied all is well normal weekly check is advised. There is no bleed point.

All covered in Ace Answers.

Have now managed to change the oil and filter. Bit of trouble removing the old filter, it was a very large (MANN?) filter and the exhaust was in the way getting the removal tool round it. Anyway done now.

Question: the new filter I got from BBC spares seems slightly too big; it screws on (after a bit of a fiddle) but it 'sticks' out on the edge where it connects to the engine. No leaks from filter as far as I can see so I take it it is ok?
