(Home) Bodywork. Flare for emergencies.

Hi
I replaced my Townace with a Liteace and its got one of those red flares held by spring clips in the front passenger footwell. I want rid so can I safely remove it or should I ask the Fire Brigade for advice?

I've never seen one but from previous discussions here I imagine Toyota fitted something resonably safe to carry, remove or use. However it may be illegal to have it and certainly you can't just throw it away.

I would imagine that an early visit or phone call to the fire brigade or the police would be wise. If you find out a safe recommended method for setting it off and disposing of it, then let us know the detail.

Hi Graham,

If you have not yet disposed of your flare then I will have it for my Townie. I have been searching for one for some time. Please let me know if you still have it and what price you want for it.

Thanks,

Bill.

The flares are illegal in the UK, should have been removed by the importer. I did have chapter and verse but have lost it, something to do with the Firearms Act and the carriage of explosives.

Clive,

I have been talking to a policewomen friend about the legality of flares in the UK after you mentioned in your post that they are illegal. She has told me that because they are emergency / distress flares they are legal in the UK as long as they are not removed from the vehicle. It is illegal to carry them in public unless they are in a steel box or to use them in public. In fact the law is very similar to the firearms law.

I got my info from the local DVLA office just under 3 years ago, perhaps things have changed since then?
Mind you if they cannot be removed from the vehicle, and therefore used, whats the point of having one?
I've still not found anything else to fit in the bracket though.

A nice little torch, with two AA batteries in it, fits neatly in the flare bracket, easy to find in the dark as well then.

Regards Rob.

Bill
If you want the flare you are welcome to it. No charge just indemnify me for £1,000,000. Only joking!
Seriously though you can have it with pleasure. Just so you know it's stamped 2005.
I have removed it from the Litey and placed it inside a holed brick. If you don't want it I will contact the fire brigade for advice on disposal or send it to a certain ex employer who I owe one too....
