(Home) Diesel valve clearances

Hi
I need to adjust the valve clearances on the diesel engine and could not find information on this on the Ace Answers site. I have access to the RM025E manual but do not have a spring compression tool and am interested in finding out if the shim sizes are the same as those used in any of the Toyota petrol engines so I can maybe use second hand ones. Comments from someone who has actually done it would be appreciated.

Thanks
Russell

Shims are unique to C- series engines, however those from 1,2, or 3C/ CT/ CTE are all identical.

You don't need the special tool, a big screwdriver to compress the bucket and a pair of tweezers to extract the shim from atop it will suffice.

But I wouldn't do too much unless there's a blatant problem. The clearances tend not to alter dramatically on these engines. If the engine isn't too noisy when warm, and the lifters are all free to rotate (proving a clearance between them and the cam lobes) when the engine is stone cold, you're good to go!

I cannot say if petrol engine shims are the same as the diesel (2C type) but, there are a number of contributors to this forum who might be able to help with spare shims, including me. It is, of course, neccessary to accurately measure the shims to determine the sizes you require and, in my case, I have been able to get "near" sizes lapped when doing the head ovehaul. The spring compression tool is not very complicated and a passable replacement can be made up quite easily to give just enough depression, on the valve, (with the particular piston well down in the bore) to get the shim into it's recess.

Thanks David and John for your comments which have given me the confidence to proceed. I will measure the clearances and go from there.
